Object history note

The painting was bequeathed to the NACF (National Art Collections Fund, now known as The Art Fund) by Professor G. C. Allen, who died in 1982. His will stated that if one of the children in the painting proved to be Florence Nightingale it should be given to the National Portrait Gallery. This, however, was not the case and the picture was presented to the Geffrye Museum.
