Object history note

This chair was previously catalogued as possibly being made from painted birch; following its examination in 2009 by Adam Bowett, independent furniture historian, the description has been updated to painted beech or walnut, which may not originally have been painted.

This chair was made for the restaurant of the first Wembley Stadium, originally known as the Empire Stadium. The stadium was built by architects John Simpson and Maxwell Ayreton and engineer Sir Owen Williams and was completed in 1923. It was built as the centrepiece of the Empire Exhibition of 1924. Greyhound racing was introduced at the stadium in 1927.
